The man who said thats folks who were complaining about the poor state of the economy were “whiners” (see YouTube video in sidebar) and that we were only in a “mental recession” has seen the writing on the wall and stepped down as campaign co-chair to John McCain.

ARLINGTON, VA — Today, former U.S. Senator Phil Gramm issued the following statement:
“It is clear to me that Democrats want to attack me rather than debate Senator McCain on important economic issues facing the country. That kind of distraction hurts not only Senator McCain’s ability to present concrete programs to deal with the country’s problems, it hurts the country. To end this distraction and get on with the real debate, I hereby step down as Co-Chair of the McCain Campaign and join the growing number of rank-and-file McCain supporters.” (emphasis mine)
Not to be nitpicky Senator Gramm, but I am pretty sure the attacks on you were bi-partisan in nature including the distancing from you by your former boss soon after your boneheaded comments. But then again one would have to question why McCain hired you as an economic adviser (are you still working in that capacity?) in the first place considering your ties to Enron and the ongoing mortgage meltdown.
