When the press starts getting too hostile, what is one to do? In the case of the Bush Administration, you just cut them out of the loop.
When you don’t like the question, how do you handle the answer? You reply with another question.
Press question – Does President Bush think the cease-fire in Israel and Lebanon will undermine support for Hezbollah?White House Press Secretary Tony Snow’s response – “Well, we’re going to find out, aren’t we?”
Press question – “Did the president call for the respect of sovereignty by both sides?”
White House Press Secretary Tony Snow’s response – “Respect of sovereignty?” Snow parried.
Add to that the President’s latest tactic of taking trips without the press plane and it seems that he has found a way to keep the press at arms length. I guess when your poll numbers are consistently in the 30’s you have nothing to lose.
