From A Billion for Governor Press release:
I’m here to clarify and expand upon my view of the abortion ban, forced into law by Mike Rounds.
This abortion ban is a rigid, unforgiving law. It is too restrictive. Women and their families have no options.
It is a law that will waste taxpayer money to defend lawsuits and pay lawyers. That money would be better spent on education, health care, and economic development for the families of South Dakota.
South Dakota already has some of the most restrictive abortion laws in the nation. There is a mandatory 24 hour waiting period. There is mandatory counseling. There must be parental notification if a minor seeks an abortion. There is only one clinic in the state that currently performs abortions.
In addition, the abortion ban has no exceptions for rape or incest. This further victimizes the women of South Dakota.
This abortion ban shuts the door on the last option for a woman facing serious health care issues while pregnant.
As a physician, I believe if a woman must deal with conditions such as ovarian cancer, breast cancer, diabetes, kidney disease, hypertension, or a host of other illnesses, then the decision to continue her pregnancy should be left to the woman, her family and her physician. This decision should not be left to Mike Rounds.
Mike Rounds’ tragic failure of leadership forced the abortion ban into law. A leader takes ownership of the bills he or she signs. This abortion ban has created more division in South Dakota than anything in our state’s history. This abortion ban is bad government, bad leadership, and provides bad results for the people of South Dakota.
On a related note, Jack Billion’s brother, Stephen Billion, showed up at the press conference held by Dr. Billion to oppose his brothers position. After the press conference Stephen Billion held his own press conference to show his support for the abortion ban and Governor Mike Rounds.
I support this courageous act by our S.D. Legislature and Governor Rounds, because it recognizes the scientific and moral truth about human life in the womb," Stephen Billion read.
Jack Billion responded to his brothers stunt by saying that the abortion ban is a divisive issue and it shows how some people have little tolerance for other views.
He has his right. He has the right to believe the way he wants," the candidate said. "I don’t know that he has the right to tell me what I have to believe, and that’s the whole gist of this law."
