Iwo Jima Photographer Dies

iwojima

The man that took the most famous photo of World War II has died of natural causes at the age of 94. Joe Rosenthal, who almost didn’t make the climb to the top of Mount Suribachi because he heard that a flag had already been raised, actually caught the second raising of a larger US flag out of the corner of his eye, swung around and snapped this photo on February 23,1945.

"What I see behind the photo is what it took to get up to those heights _ the kind of devotion to their country that those young men had, and the sacrifices they made," Rosenthal once said. "I take some gratification in being a little part of what the U.S. stands for."
Another notable loss from America’s greatest generation.
